From Unbecoming a Nurse to Overcoming AddictionME09/10/2010 8:00 AM - 09/10/2010 4:00 PM The speaker, Paula Davies Scimeca, RN, MS is a national expert on addiction in the nursing profession and the author of two recent books. Her first book, Unbecoming a Nurse, outlines the need for education & early intervention to help nurses “bypass the hidden chemical dependency trap.” Her second book, From Unbecoming a Nurse to Overcoming Addiction, profiles 29 “candid self-portraits of nurses in recovery.” This conference will address topics related to addiction prevention, impairment and recovery in the nursing profession. It will also highlight recovery resources available to nurses in our state & will feature a speakers’ panel of nurses from Maine!
Uniting Maine’s Recovery Communities: 2nd Annual Recovery RetreatME09/11/2010 8:30 AM - 09/11/2010 3:00 PM Join others who embrace the pathways of recovery for a day of sharing, learning, rejuvenation and fun! Workshop topics will include self-care strategies for life, spirituality & nature, celebrating the many recovery pathways, & allies in recovery. We will also feature a session for nurses in recovery facilitated by Paula Davies Scimeca, RN, MS, national expert & author on addiction and recovery in the nursing profession. This will focus on self-care, empowerment & self- support. Lunch will be provided!
Walk for RecoveryME09/11/2010 12:30 PM - 09/11/2010 5:00 PM Many of us feel the impact of addiction throughout our lives through family members, friends, co-workers, schools. Catholic Charities Maine Counseling Services in partnership with Milestone Foundation, Crossroads for Women, Day One and Serenity House is organizing Portland’s first annual Walk for Recovery in celebration of National Alcohol and Drug Recovery Month to promote the issues involved with alcohol and drug addiction, This is a free event, although we would like to suggest a donation of $10.00 per participant. Free event t-shirts will be given to the first 250 people to register at the event. Free refreshments will be provided along with fun activities for kids of all ages.
2010 Recovery & Wellness Resource FairME09/29/2010 2:00 PM - 09/29/2010 4:00 PM On Wednesday September 29, 2010 from 2:00-4:00 pm we will be holding our fair at Preble Street Resource Center’s Soup Kitchen dining room. The event will serve to inform and educate participants, as well as providers, about recovery-oriented resources and health promotion-related services within our community. As a coalition and as members of Portland’s diverse community, one of our goals is to create opportunities for people to have access to whatever they need in order to establish more stable and healthy lifestyles. Each year, this occasion offers area providers an opportunity to reach nearly 100 people accessing Preble Street’s services. We offer free food, prizes and the opportunity for Portland’s vulnerable community members to access 25+ local service providers. Not only is this a great opportunity for participants, it’s a great networking opportunity for providers!
